Mr. Painter - Physical Education Subject Leader

The Government provides a ‘Sport Premium’ to support the delivery of PE and sport in primary schools. This funding is ring-fenced, and allocated directly to primary schools across England, providing them with a dedicated resource to invest in PE and sport.

The funding is allocated through a lump sum for each school and a per-pupil top-up mechanism. The formula references the number of primary-aged pupils (i.e. children between the ages of 5 and 11). All schools with seventeen or more primary-aged pupils will receive a lump sum of £16,000 plus a premium of £10 per pupil.

At The Acorns we believe that our children deserve the best teaching and learning in all areas of the curriculum, therefore we will be spending considerably more than the Sports Grant to provide all of your children with the best Physical Education possible.

Our aim is to provide all children at The Acorns with at least 2 hours of high quality, enjoyable and challenging physical education, as well as ensuring that children are being as active as possible during break and lunch times. A high priority of ours in recent years has been to aim to develop our staff to become excellent PE teachers. We are using the Primary Sports Grant to ensure that this happens quickly and is consistent over time.

"Our teacher is a fun and amazing PE teacher - our teacher and coach are both equally good at teaching PE," Year 3 pupil

We currently work with the Beth Tweddle Gymnastics Company to deliver high quality Gymnastics lessons to all our children. This also allows our staff to work alongside qualified, experienced coaches to gain valuable skills and develop into quality Physical Education teachers.

"We do a lot - we learn different moves and sequences for our performances," Year 4 pupil.

"All children love participating in these sessions as they can clearly see how they have progressed week on week," Year 5 Teacher

"I'm learning real skills with really good coaches; the coaches are easier to understand. The coaches talk to the teachers a lot and the teacher always joins in," Year 4 pupil.

Throughout the year, our dedicated staff also run a range of after school sporting clubs. In additional to this, we offer after school sports clubs run by professionally trained coaches.

"I'm also enjoying the sessions and finding it great for my own professional development," Year 3 pupil.

"I really appreciate the after-school clubs, they are such a godsend for parents and the kids to have those opportunities," Parent.

"I have loved teaching at The Acorns. It has been a pleasure to teach their pupils, who have been extremely well behaved, and keen to learn new skills in every lesson. Teachers have been very welcome and supportive during my lessons. I look forward to continuing our programme after half term," Beth Tweddle Gymnastics coach.

Over the years we have provided opportunities for our children to experience inspiration sporting events. We work closely with our partners, Beth Tweddle Gymnastics, Chester FC and Cheshire Phoenix to provide our pupils with amazing sporting experiences.
