P.E. & Sports Grant

Mr. N Painter - Physical Education Subject Leader

The Government provides a  ‘Sport Premium’ to support the delivery of PE and sport in primary schools. This funding is ring-fenced, and allocated directly to primary schools across England, providing them with a dedicated resource to invest in PE and sport.

The funding is allocated through a lump sum for each school and a per-pupil top-up mechanism. The formula references the number of primary-aged pupils (i.e. children between the ages of 5 and 11). All schools with seventeen or more primary-aged pupils will receive a lump sum of £16,000 plus a premium of £10 per pupil.

At The Acorns we believe that our children deserve the best teaching and learning in all areas of the curriculum, therefore we will be spending considerably more than the Sports Grant in order to provide all of your children with the best Physical Education possible.

Our aim is to provide all children at The Acorns with at least 2 hours of high quality, enjoyable and challenging physical education, as well as ensuring that children are being as active as possibe during break and lunch times. A high priority of ours in recent years has been to aim to develop our staff to become excellent PE teachers. We are using the Primary Sports Grant to ensure that this happens quickly and is consistent over time.

"Our Teacher is a fun and amazing PE teacher - our teacher and coach are both equally good at teaching PE," Year 3 Child

From January 2016, Total Gymnastics have worked with every child from years 1-6 in gymnastics, sports and dance as well as running dance sessions for reception children.

"We do a lot - we learn different moves and sequences for our performances," Year 4 Child.

During these sessions class teachers will work alongside our designated sports coaches to help develop our ability to deliver high quality Physical Education lessons.

"All children love participating in these sessions as they can clearly see how they have progressed week on week," Year 5 Teacher

As part of our agreement with Total Gymnastics, we have already had a very special assembly run by Britain’s most successful gymnast ever, Beth Tweddle!

"I'm learning real skills with really good coaches, the coaches are easier to understand. The coaches talk to the teachers a lot and the teacher always joins in," Year 4 Child

Throughout the year, our dedicated staff also run a range of after school sporting clubs. In additional to this, we offer after school sports clubs run by professionally trained coaches.

"I'm also enjoying the sessions and finding it great for my own professional development," Year 3 Teacher

"I have loved teaching at The Acorns. It has been a pleasure to teach their pupils, who have been extremely well behaved, and keen to learn new skills in every lesson. Teachers have been very welcome and supportive during my lessons. I look forward to continuing our programme after half term," Total Gymnasticstics coaches.
